This is part 2 of the ride across Oregon completed this summer. Part 1 was completed prior to this and is in the following photo essay. Don Spencer and I did a car scouting trip of potential routes to Long Beach from Portland earlier this year. This was in anticipation of riding there to join Bud's Long Beach weekend. We came up with a plan to meet at Maggie's Buns in Forest Grove as the start location and go from there to Cape Disappointment State Park via the Banks Vernonia trail, Astoria via Highways 47 and 202 and then Cape Disappointment via the Astoria Metzger Bridge. The return trip was to be on the Washington side of the Columbia using Highway 4, the Cathlamet ferry to Oregon, Old Highway 30 to Hudson Parcher County park near Rainier, Old Rainier road to Rainier and then Highway 30 back to P-town. We started with Don, myself, Scotty, Dick Fairbank, Barbara Brady and Roger Harris. Dick Weber rode in from Astoria to meet us at the Big Eddy campground the first night with Brian Hammer and Steve joining us at Big Eddy the following morning with road bikes. Scott and I ended up being the only ones finishing the tour due to changes of plans, some people only wanting to do the loaded tour outbound and in one case a health issue. The highlights for me were the trip out to Cape Disappointment and the return trip since I had never been on the Washington side and found the roads and surrouding areas very enjoyable to ride through with excellent weather. That piece was also about 100 miles with many rollers and 2 decent climbs on each side of the river. You will notice less and less people as the tour progressed due to attrition with only me and the Long Haul Trucker by the time I arrived home. An interesting turn of events but very enjoyable none the less.
